1,000 killed in a week, Iraqi Interior Ministry estimates
An estimated 1,000 people have been killed throughout Iraq in the past week due to gunbattles, drive-by shootings and bomb attacks, an Interior Ministry official said. The deadliest attack came Saturday when a bombing at a crowded market in central Baghdad killed 128 people and wounded 343 others.

BAGHDAD, Feb 4 (Reuters) - A U.S.-Iraqi campaign to stabilise Baghdad will begin soon and the offensive against militants will be on a scale never seen during four years of war, American officers said on Sunday.
