Dj KASIO (NU SPIRIT HELSINKI)
Kasio stuck his hand in the jam jar of recorded music back in 1983, when he, at the tender age of 12, composed a progressive tango called 'Tunturikukkia' for his uncle Eero Aven. He was brought up in bustle of outdoor dance halls in rural Finland, an indigenous culture devoted to the art of dancing, drinking, fighting, heart-wrenching melodies and other larger-than-lifeness.
The intervening years have seen Kasio dabble in a staggering number of obscure (...you wouldn't know) and not-so-obscure (Amorphis, etc) projects, as well as a few doomed attempts at studying music.
It was education-borne ennui that drove our hero to the decks.
In 1996, Kasio leaned hard on a few DJ friends (Juhis and Bunuel, Helsinki legends both) and after some discussion, he was allowed to take on the Technics at a speakeasy. Beat mixing was essential for survival, as the weirdest things could spontaneously happen. You might be playing your stuff, look up and see a stage full of rappers...or instrumentalists.
For Kasio this opened a whole new perspective on the act of making music. Together with his partner-in-beats DJ Anna S, Kasio has been a fixture on the Helsinki club stage
ever since.
Around the same time Kasio was mercilessly sucked into the Giant Robot maelstrom. The collective was born out of some chemical need to play every conceivable party and unleash 2 to 3 hours of furious slowness on audiences in the form of dub-soaked hip hop. Both inborn and artificially induced confusion was in the air on those nights. You could smell it...This genesis, where no one really knew how to play much and it was all about gall and attitude (and up to 20 people on stage), eventually, after the first obscure vinyl testament to heavy riffage, birthed a real band that has since released a number of albums, toured Europe (from Reykjavik to Paris, Berlin to St. Petersburg) and wreaked havoc on sweaty people everywhere. Oh, and penetrated the top 10 in Finland, as well as some weird German club chart.
Kasio's tenure in the NuSpirit Helsinki collective started around the same time. An encounter with the ever present and global Lil' Tony led to a session playing keyboards at the NSH studio, which in turn led to more sessions with NSH svengali Tuomas K. With time, a veritable cadre of
top-notch musicians was assembled around this junta of jazzy beats. Kasio's area of expertise in NSH is to inject massive doses of musical and arranging freshness into the musical mainline.
NuSpirit Helsinki's debut album has had an astounding reception worldwide. The press has been ecstatic and gigs have been plentiful. NSH, too, managed to crack the top 20 in Finland. For 15 weeks. The band has been praised by the likes of Straight No Chaser, Gilles Peterson, Billboard, Mixmag, Wire...
Since the NSH live circus is a logistical challenge not to be undertaken by the faint of heart on unsubstantial grounds, the aforementioned core junta DJs a lot. Look for shows by
Kasio, Eppu, Ender and Lil' Tony). The clubs is where music of this ilk takes its steps.
On the club front, Kasio's current project, together with Anna S, is Club Bundolo.
