Hinterlandt was brought to life in 2002 by Jochen Gutsch, a German musician who at the time lived in Sydney, Australia.
Jochen had played in a number of underground rock bands for some years before he decided to refresh his approach to music production and consequently started the much more flexible project Hinterlandt.
Today Hinterlandt understands itself as a popular music outfit with a strong experimental edge. Whilst the degree of experimentation varies from release to release, the overall picture is held together by a distinctly personal style of composition.
Though Hinterlandt is a solo project in the studio, it is usually presented by an ensemble of musicians in live situations.
In January 2004, Jochen relocated from Sydney to Cologne, Germany.
