MAKOTO

Born in Tokyo in 1977 Makoto's musical interests started in Kindergarten with Beethoven. "Though not a musician, my father loved music and there was a lot of it in the house. It was Beethoven's Ninth that first got me hooked, then I went through the whole catalogue." Classical music totally consumed him until Junior high school, when he heard Ryuichi Sakamoto's Soundtracks for Last Emperor and The Sheltering Sky.

"Hearing Sakamoto started me experimenting with sampling and synthesisers." He was also steered to Ravel's collected works.
Following that he moved on to jazz, rare groove and soul. Makoto has a large repertoire of musical influences. He cited Leroy Hutson and Marvin Gaye, along with Curtis Mayfield and Lonnie Liston Smith - all major 70's players as well as Blue Note Producer Larry Mizell. Makoto then entered Nippon University where his relationship to sound turned academic, here he studied acoustics, the computer simulation of the simulation of the sounds and reverberations produced in acoustic instruments.

Makoto's first meeting with Drum & Bass came around this time. During this time of his life he was organising events and Djing in Tokyo clubs. This is when he first came across Bukem's Logical Progression album and Goldie's Inner City Life. Hooked on the drum'n'bass sound, he started to experiment with a sequencer and an Akai sampler. "I spent about two years trying to re-create the sound of the U.K. drum'n'bass sound".

Endless hours of exploration and several additions to his equipment led to some recordings, Makoto's relationship with sound were soon recognised and led to releases in his home country.

Encouraged by this good response, it was around this time that Makoto decided to send a demo track to a number of British based labels, including Good Looking Records, in a bid to find out how far he had progressed with his explorations. According to Makoto's memory, "Bukem replied with a letter telling me to make the beat less frantic and to make changes to the arrangement." With these comments taken in mind Makoto went on to make the luxuriously textured 12inch release "Wave".

"Perhaps in older drum'n'bass tracks the focus was predominantly on the beat, it's about the overall mood. Each track is made to be listened to as music." "Wave" was released through Good Looking's Nexus in 1998. In 1999, Makoto's track "Butterfly" was chosen for one of Bukem's mix Compilations Progression Sessions 4, proof that Makoto had grasped the sound of Good Looking. Later that year Makoto signed a long-term contract & has since gone on to become one of Good Looking's most prolific artists.

Makoto is currently proving himself to be one of the more diverse and promising unknown elements in Good Looking's musical repertoire. Two funk filled tracks appeared on the Earth 4 compilation in the shape of "Extensions of Life" and "Peace of Mind", with "You're Divine" appearing on Earth 5 and getting an exclusive release in Japan. On the Drum'n'Bass front the Progression Sessions series continues to feature many of his tracks. It seems that no matter what type of set Bukem plays, be it Drum'n'Bass, Down tempo or House your sure to find a Dub with Makoto's name on it.

It is "with the feeling of soul and jazz in mind" that Makoto creates music. He believes in the need to maintain a human feel in Music.

DEEIZM

Shelley aka Deeizm is a talented up and coming vocalist whose talent extends much further than simply vocalisation. Along with being able to sing, rap and perform, she is also able to play the drums, keeping it on the sideline although it is one of her best assets.

Shelley's upbringing was influenced musically by her dad's motown/soul DJ'ing, allowing her to always be surrounded by a great sound system. Shelley began training at The Soul Experience Vocal Academy in Hackney at the age of 16. It was there that she received personal and group training covering all aspects of singing including performance, music theory, breathing techniques and writing. Her vocal trainer while there was Patrick Jean Paul Dennis.

Shelley landed her first record deal at the age of 17. The infamous UK RnB/soul producer Ray Hayden produced her first album. It was not till after this experience that Shelley began DJ'ing. At this point she also began working vocally with various UK garage and house producers. Slowly she gained the respect that she deserved as a talented singer/songwriter throughout the UK garage scene.

It was through UK garage that she got her first taste of MC'ing. With tracks under her belt such as `Madness', `What's This', `Irresistible' and `Glad U Came 2me', releases on Ministry of Sound, pure Garage 2 and 4, Artful Dodger's `Re-Rewind' album, Pure Silk and Twice as Nice, Shelley started playing the perfect role as a female MC.

She performed at the Dome in 2001 and 2002 as part of the United Grooves Collective. At the same time she still had her roots deep into drum and bass, DJ'ing, collecting records and playing on many pirate radio stations including Freak FM, Force FM, Shine FM, Passion FM, Smooth FM and Active FM.

Shelley was one half of the girl DJ & MC duo 2nd Nature for three years. Working alongside female selectress DJ Jolie, Shelley was introduced to vocalising over house music. This collaboration lead them to have residencies at the Soul Avengers' night `Dirty', Kinky-milinky, Pascha, Freaky Disco at Rouge and Thurrock Music Festival, to name but a few.

2nd Nature went on to play on the internet radio station Ammo City, appear on guest slots on Live4beats, and play in various countries around the world such as Planet Roughe in Bangalore, India for new years eve 2003 and Fast Forward Hamburg in Berlin, Germany.

Shelley has also appeared on television in the program Trouble TV. It was there that they shot a short music video for her. Under the TV stage name of Lady Angel, Shelley promoted her motto: Follow your dreams; you can make it if you try.

After six years in the music industry, Shelley finally has her own studio and is signed exclusively to the Good Looking Organisation, MC'ing for Makoto as well as guest DJ's at Progression Sessions. Not only is she the first female signed to the label, but she is also covering all the areas, including vocalising, producing, and MC'ing.

Although she's in the early stages of production, her knowledge of music, her past experiences and her ability to play the drums have given her great rhythm and a natural ear for music. From an early age she set her aspirations and expectations very high and to this day she's been able to achieve everything that she has put her mind to.

Her father's musical influence combined with her voice and her passion for rapping and creating songs have created the best ingredients for a MC/vocalist album. Her style is very influenced by the combination of future jazz and funk that can be found in drum and bass.

Shelley believes music can and does relate to every emotion, which is why she understands the importance of versatility within her music. She has a style for every occasion; soulful, sweet, melodic as well as dark rhymes with an edge.
