Lil' Tony Cosmic City Ep - Versatile Records
Review
Lil' Tony is joining the ranks of the very tasty Versatile catalogue. Lil Tony is a veteran DJ of the Helsinki club scene, he is responsible since the beginning for the Nineties for the best electro nights which take place in this part of Scandinavia. After having recently turned towards production, Versatile is proud to offer his first 12. Tonis musical roots are reflected in his DJ sets, which range from deep house to soulful techno coming just as much from Detroit, Chicago or New York. However, he does not limit himself just to that incorporating Disco, Afro and Cosmic or Balearic sounds in the mix. His influences can be heard on this record, which as its name indicates it, seems to be an ode to Cosmic. Cosmic Afro Pan kicks of strong with a heavy rhythm and a huge flanged bassline, which will be the leitmotiv of the track. The groove evolves constantly as the bass modulates around it. The track peaks towards the end as some little acid noises add on before the other elements get diluted as it winds down. Cosmic Afro Dub, again the name speaks for itself as it is a dubbed out version of the previous track. On the first version the accent is on the low synthetic bass, whilst here Lil Tony focuses more on the piano keys and the evolution of the beat. A great mixture of Detroit techno and the old cosmic sound.
