Back in October this year I was kindly asked by Jnks to produce an Old Skool mix with him for broadcast on Dutch radio station SonicRadio.nl. These days the tunes that taught me to initially DJ in the very early 1990’s still sit tightly on the mantlepiece. I don’t play Old Skool much, but it’s a pleasure to spin here and there. Especially for those nostalgic purposes :)

So here we have one hell of an old to new musical journey. My half of this mix begins with tunes from classic labels such as Impact Records, Remix Records and Kniteforce! The tunes span from 1991-1995. By the 70minute mark in this mix, Jnks takes over the turntables bringing in his “Newer” Happy Hardcore anthems from 2005-2006. So it’s the old with some very new!

I hope it brings a smile to some people’s faces who know this vibe… It’s just ‘noise’ to some people… but to me it’s where it all began… Where computer technology was limited with no advanced software like these days. Enjoy…

My part of the mix starts out gentler than usual progressing towards some hard & high BPM tunes. It was nice to work with my mate Progression and show everyone the two sides of Happy Hardcore – Old and new! I hope that everyone else enjoys this spread of alternative tunes too! Comments & feedback are welcome in Finnish and English! There'll sure be more to come!'

....Didn't like those new-wave happy 'ardcorechoons, but the early oldskool-sound. :P~ I Piano. "Tall & Handsome"-oldskool version. <3

I guess your a true "Old Skooler" ;) The newer stuff has progressed quite considerably. Of course the productions are cleaner and actually hold the same BPM from the beginning of a tune to the end!

(It's tricky to mix the old stuff. They used shit sequencers on the old Atari 520st and then did cheap record pressings that were not totally round... more oval!)

But everyone has there own tastes :)

Yeah... Huge Synth stabs... Huge piano builds... Chipmonk vocals... and some crossfader movement! It's all fun... So I shall be seeing you there! For a Happy Christmas!

Why it's so good? Becouse it's comined rave, jungle, happy feelings and loose heel(ings)s.

I'm a bit slow on the comments back... But, Yes, Happy Hardcore was the D&B breaks with the piano lines. It was like a mergence of "Jungle" with melodic strings etc. Then the Jungle split to "Ragga-Jungle" and then finally kind of dissapeared... But was launched as Drum n' Bass and Intelligent D&B. The traditional Happy Hardcore died... I guess it was too repetative in the end. And some tunes had no effort or thought...

Now its changed again. Happy Hardcore has Harder Dance mixed with it and kind of rose back again in the Hard Dance scene. It had the advantage of having a break. Now it's perhaps fresher?

But, at least a good old skool label still goes on strong: Kniteforce.co.uk

Once again, have been so busy in January that i didn't notice the comments!

Yeps... Isn't it genius that they took a dirty sample from Aliens (film)... Great stuff.... Then dropped a HUGE phat b-line, amens and driving D&B beat! Good stuff from Kniteforce records that is... Original material. And they still do releases as far as i am aware ;)
