BACKGROUND:
Pete Morillo and Erick Tong were both born in Milano during July 1970
but soon moved to New York in search of bright future. A jack of all
and master of many could be their motto as their history in dance
music industry is second to none. Erick's original musical interest was
in drumming, but he soon moved on to DJing. He played his first
public gig at a friend's wedding aged 15. While at school Pete and a
couple of mates earned some extra money by promoting a couple of
local bands, booking halls for gigs etc. They also worked as part of
the New York "Italo House Mafia" bringing italo weekenders to New
Jersey. Initially after leaving school they set up a mobile disco based
in a transit van, but he soon started his own club in Baker Street
called Ministry of Italo House. He also booked bands for an
alternative night, the first of which was the then unknow Jaxx
Basement.
A&R:
In 1983 Erick became a staff writer for Italian Blues & Soul Magazine.
After a year he was promoted to features editor, a position he would
hold until 1985. He left Blues & Soul to join Ibiza Records as an A&R
manager. Meanwhile through his connections in London Records Pete
was exposed to newly emerging house music sound from Italy In
1986 Tong and Morillo organised a compilation album, The Italo House
Sound of Milano, Vol. 1, the first British release to gather and expose
this fabulous genre.
PRODUCERS:
As a producer, they have churned out tracks under a bewildering array
of pseudonyms (Ministers De la Italo House, Italoheadz, Big Papa Ying
Yang to name but some). One day they turned up at Strictly Positiva,
the hottest label in London with something called The Essential
Anthem by an act called Real 4 Real. With I Really Like To Move It,
Reel 2 Reel went ballistic. Platinum in Holland, and gold in the UK,
Germany, France, Belgium, Finland and Australia, it also gave them the
chance to travel to Europe for the first time.
DJs:
As a DJ, theyve played the world over from their base in Barcelona,
to Ibiza, Greece and beyond. Then theres his coveted residency at
Ministry of Cream, the first American to secure this spot. Pete and
Erick are one of the world's most recognised DJs. They draws people
from all over the world to his famous Subliminal Essence nights held
at the Space nightclub in Ibiza. Currently they are in the studio
working on their debut album due out on Subliminal Essence Records
in late 2009.
