DJ MILLA LEHTO [PUSSY CLUB/MOIST, HKI]
Having been involved in the club scene for several years, Milla Lehto got bitten by the DJ bug in 2000. In the summer of 2002 she launched her own monthly club night at Ever in Helsinki. Milla has also secured a residency at the legendary Pussy Club and it's 'little sister' Moist, which is the only finnish club that is hosted solely by female resident dj's. She likes to play bottom heavy house music with a healthy dose of breakbeats and electro-esque sounds thrown in for good measure. As well as being a member of the blooming Break That House -collective, Milla spins regularly at the most famous clubs throughout the country. Having been voted for the Best Upcoming DJ of 2003 in the finnish Platinum Club Awards, she is considered to be one of the leading ladies in the Finnish clubland.
DJ OLLIS [404, HKI]
Perhaps you have been wondering who is that widely smiling, yet intensively concentrating DJ doing those smooth mixes behind the decks. Well, the answer may well be OlliS, an uprising 24 year- old new talent from Helsinki, the capital of Finland. Although he has been dj´ing only since the beginning of year 2003, OlliS was voted for the 2nd place in the Finnish club awards in the 'New DJ of the year' -category. He has already played in almost every major club in Finland including Hallmark, Unity, Fantasy, Jack, vooDoo and Dive. OlliS holds a residency in Club 404 (Helsinki) and is one of the founding members of the 'Break That House' -DJ-collective with DJ's Milla Lehto and Genki. He has been playing alongside Ian Ossia, Orkidea, Jori Hulkkonen, Mr.A and many other Finnish DJ's.
OlliS´ musical history goes way back in time. He grew up in a very musical family where many different kinds of music were present most of the time. At a young age of 6 he started to play the piano and a few years later his parents offered him a chance to study music theory. Drums were the second instrument to be added on OlliS´ repertoire when he started studying at junior high school.
At around 12 years of age Olli got interested in electronic music. His first musical idol must have been Paul van Dyk. Olli was also really into rave at those times, which were the peak moments of the genre. That was also the time when he got interested in making electronic music with simple tracker programs. After following the trance scene from the mid 90´s he moved to progressive house music. Since then his all time favourites DJ's have been Sasha & Digweed, Chris Fortier, Anthony Pappa, Ian Ossia, Nigel Dawson and Paul Oakenfold to name but a few. At the moment there are also so many great producers that it is even hard to be updated, but OlliS' favourite ones are Luke Chable, James Holden, Chris Fortier, GPAL, Mick Burns, Matthew Dekay, Yunus Güvenen, John Graham etc. Big respects go to Finnish talents U&K, Orkidea and Introvert also.
OlliS represents a new generation of progressive house music, a style that is built on strong melodies, groovy basslines, breakbeats and trance elements. He also likes to play tribal and tech house and more chilled house once in a while if needed, but the key word is progressiveness. Expect to hear a lot from this man in the future! And meanwhile, enjoy his nicely flowing moody mixes and accurate mixing skills
DJ GENKI [STEALTH CREW/EXOGENIC RECORDS, HKI]
An integral part of the Stealth Unit crew in Finland, as well as an A&R person for a finnish label - Exogenic Records - Genki has had his hands in many soups that have been brewing in this deep, cold land in northern Scandinavia. Based in Helsinki, he's been playing music in parties for about 10 years now. He started in the tender age of 17 in warehouse parties playing hard trance and early forms of psy-sounds, pioneering the scene with crews like Smooth Underground and many forest party organizers.
The first years of Genki's life as a Dj were spent in illegal warehouse raves and bush gatherings, and the scene in Finland was quite young and still searching its form. This was the era of mad parties and outlaw action in the finnish capital, Helsinki, and the people going to the parties were die-hard ravers who protested loudly if (and often when) the police came to stop a party in deserted factories, deep northern forests or wherever the organizers managed to pile up a stack of speakers and get a home-made decor up in a couple of hours.
1998 marked as a turning point for Genki when he went for a 6 month trip to Australia and heard the local people playing all kinds of music in the parties there, instead of the generic order of playing just trance or breakbeat etc. in a certain party. This journey also lit his interest in rough drum n bass and dirty breakbeats, which became his main interests after drifting away from the psy/trancescene to the more industrial sounds and harder rhythms a year before. Of course his old fans were horrified of the sudden change, and he had to search for new ground and people who would appreciate the more varied forms of dance music.
Forever the pioneer, Genki has been persistently pushing the hard drum n bass / breakbeat sounds in Finland for the recent years, and now the fruits of the hard work are beginning to be ripe and the finnish clubbers are starting to warm up to this sound. This has demanded a lot of work from especially his colleagues and friends in the Stealth Unit and Freeform-collectives (amongst others), but still they have managed to put up several packed nights of drum n bass and breakbeat in a country where people were certain that trance would be the only viable alternative if you wanted a packed house in your party...
Not wanting to close any style or sound out of the dancefloor, Genki has now turned his head on the progressive house sounds and includes them into his breakbeat/electro sets, creating musical journeys with no genre-defining boundaries. Last year he was selected as the 3rd runner up in the 'Best Finnish Dj' competition, topped only by the evergreen trance/hardhouse Djs who have dominated the list for several years.
The future is always open for this guy, and there is no way of telling what he might be up to next. These past years have taken him and his music from almost every city or town in Finland to countries like France, Sweden, Australia, Latvia, Estonia and Germany. He's had the privilege of playing with such acts as Bad Company, Dom&Roland, Plump Dj's, Wayne Fountain, Darren Price (Underworld), Dj TeeBee, Matrix, Klute and many others.
No genres, no boundaries, just pure, unadulterated music.
