SEOUL, Korea October 20, 2004 Samsung Electronics unveils the world's first mobile phone (model: SCH-S250) equipped with a 5-megapixel camera. Just one year after the introduction of its first 1-megapixel camera phone and 3 months after its first 3.2-megapixel camera phone, Samsung proves its technological prowess again with this revolutionary product.
The CCD (charge-coupled device) camera and high-sensitivity flash allow the user to take the same quality pictures one gets from a top-end digital camera. Similar to Samsung's premium grade camera phones, the S250 can also function as a camcorder. The 92MB onboard memory can store up to 100 minutes of video (320x240), and a 32MB auxiliary memory is included as a standard feature. The shutter speed is as fast as 1/1,000 th of a second, allowing the user to film beautiful landscapes as well as subjects as close as 10 cm. The S250 can be connected to a TV to display video during shooting or to show footage that has already been recorded in the mobile phone.
The S250 comes with a unique stretch design, reminiscent of the futuristic phones seen in the movie The Matrix . The high-quality camera lens and LCD remain covered and protected when the phone is closed, and when it is stretched open, the product has the feel of a regular digital camera.
Samsung has also set a new standard in mobile phone display technology. Until now, mobile phones had been equipped with LCDs capable of 262,000-color resolution. The S250 boasts a QVGA TFD-LCD (Thin Film Diode-Liquid Crystal Display) that has previously been adapted only for top-end TVs and desktop monitors. The display can reproduce 16 million colors, over 60 times the color compared to existing mobile phone displays, all the hues found in nature; thus, QVGA resolution has been referred to as true color.
Samsung has also taken voice recognition to a higher level by introducing text-to-speech (TTS) conversion. Now the user can listen to incoming text messages or the prepared to-do list rather than having to read them.
The S250 supports high-image-quality games and 3D sound effects. If a call is received in the middle of a game, the user can restore the game later and resume play.
Other advanced functions in the S250 include an MP3 player, mobile banking capability and 64-polyphonic sound.

Samsung cooperated with the Japan-based Asahi Pentax, one of the most respected camera lens providers in the world, to develop a camera module customized for the mobile phone. This partnership began in the first-half of 2003.

Suodatin sopii ainoastaan Vodafonen V602-SH -puhelimeen, jota ei myydä Japanin ulkopuolella.
Vodafonen mukaan ongelmaa ei esiinny Japanin ulkopuolella. Vodafonella ei kuitenkaan ole sananvaltaa kieltää suodattimen myyntiä, sillä Yamada Denshi on itsenäinen yritys.
Vodafone tiedottaja sanoi CNet Newsille, ettei yhtiö koskaan markkinoisi vastaavaa laitetta.

Delft-nimisestä kaupungista otettu panoraamakuva on tiettävästi maailman suurin.
Joukko alankomaalaisia tutkijoita on ottanut - tai oikeastaan rakentanut - tiettävästi maailman suurimman digitaalisen panoraamakuvan.
Kuva, joka esittää hollantilaista Delft-nimistä kaupunkia, on kooltaan 2,5 gigapikseliä. Siinä on siis 500 kertaa enemmän pikseleitä kuin tavallisella, noin 5 megapikselin digitaalikameralla otetussa kuvassa. Jos jättikuva tulostettaisiin 300 dpi:n tarkkuudella, se olisi noin 2,5 metriä leveä ja 6 metriä pitkä.
Kuva on koostettu 600:sta robottikameran ottamasta digikuvasta, jotka napattiin Delftistä heinäkuussa 2004. Kuvien ottamiseen meni aikaa vain tunti ja 12 minuuttia. Sen sijaan viideltä tehokkaalta pc-koneelta vierähti kolme kokonaista päivää, kun ne yhdistivät kuvat toisiinsa.
Kuvan ovat tehneet tutkimus- ja teknologialaboratorio TNO:n asiantuntijat. Sen tekemisessä käytettiin valmiiksi olemassa olevaa teknologiaa. Kuva tosin oli niin iso - kuvatiedoston lopullinen koko on 7,5 gigatavua - että käytettyjä sovelluksia oli pakko päivittää.

Milloinkohan noi on tullu markkinoille?
Tein nimittäin ensimmäisenä kandivuonna (eli 2001 syksyllä) koulussa projektin, jossa suunnittelin kännykkään luurin. Osa skisseistä oli hyvin saman tapaisia kuin nuo, mutten toteuttanut yhtään ideaa siba-mallia pidemmälle. Olis varmaan pitänyt... ;)
Olisko ollu toi Alin puhelin 2002 vai 2003. Tosin toihan oli vaan läppä, mutta siitä tuli aika suosittu läppä, jonka jälkeen Pokia alkoi valmistamaan noita omiaan. Niiden luureja on ruvennut kai saamaan yleisemmin vasta tänä vuonna :)
Mutjoo, ideat on varmaan monilla samoja. Mullakin oli toteutuksessa idea SIM -kortilla varustetusta langattomasta matkapuhelimesta, joka olisi rakennettu vanhan puhelimen sisälle. Välillä sitä nimittäin kaipaa ihan oikeaa puhelinta myös himaan, mutta lankapuhelin tulee valitettavasti vain kalliimmaksi kuin langaton.
While it took the digital photography industry around six years to launch a six megapixel digital camera it seems the mobile phone industry is not hanging about. Reports from Korea are that LG Electronics is planning to launch the world's first six megapixel camera phone in Japan. It is thought that the sensor will come from Canon and there could even be plans for a 7 megapixel model. Phones with this sort of camera resolution are likely to have a have huge internal memory to store the large image files it would produce. And the image quality is unlikely to be a patch on the current crop of 7 megapixel compacts.

One example is the [iso]10,000 gigapixel[/iso] Millennium Map that is a complete aerial photograph of Britain put together by imaging company Getmapping UK.
"The image consists of an seamless aerial photograph of England and Wales stitched together using approximately 160,000 images," said Richard Rowles, systems developer for the firm.
