Ben Wilcox is 30 and has been influential within the global eclectic/leftfield club scene for over 11 years.

As a DJ Ben has had many guest spots around the world including all over Europe (including Lisbon’s Lux), South East Asia and America. As an honourary member of the Ballistic Brothers Ben toured Europe with Ashley Beedle DJ’ing at clubs and festivals, and as a member of the Massive Attack Sound System he has played with the band at many of their live shows globally. He has also supported artists such as Roy Ayers, Major Force, and Jose Feliciano and played alongside DJ’s such as Francois Kevrokian, Roni Size, Stacey Pullen, DJ Krush, Harvey, Norman Jay, Grooverider, Trouble, Peanut Butter Wolf and DJ Shadow.

In the UK Ben’s guest spots have included The Heavenly Social, Bukem’s Progression Sessions, Norman Jay’s Inner City Blues, Galway’s Jazz Juice and Shake, Dublin’s Witness festival, Destination Out, Dundee’s Homeless, Bristol’s Full Cycle, Manchester’s Electric Chair, cargo’s NYE bash, Ministry of Sound and residencies at Hard Times, The Hacienda, Subterania, Market Place, Grand Central, Revolution Soho, London X-press and The Gardening Club and played the closing set at the legendary last night of The Blue Note in London .

Ben’s most well known residencies though are Far East (the legendary Blue Note / Scala / fabric club night that gave Carl Craig’s Innerzone Orchestra and Kruder and Dorfmeister their first big London gigs) and the influential That’s How It Is / THIS; the legendary night of unparalled ‘eclectic’ music at London’s Bar Rumba. Alongside DJ partner Gilles Peterson, Ben has been playing at the club for over 10 years.

As a journalist Ben was the first to pick up on artists such as Portishead and DJ Shadow (giving them their first interviews) and has worked for several magazines around the world including Urb in America, and most importantly the global leftfield ‘bible’ Straight No Chaser where he has had his own column for 8 years. This led to A & R work for Talkin’ Loud records where Ben was part of the team that signed Nuyorican Soul and Roni Size. Ben now works as part of the respected Sirkus / Laws of Motion recordings team, releasing diverse music from Maas and 2 Banks of 4 to Wax Doctor and Rollercone to Zed Bias.

Over the last 5 years Ben has become more and more involved in radio providing shows and mixes for Ross Allen’s BBC London Live slot and Gilles Peterson’s Worldwide show. Ben’s current mix can be heard on the British Airways inflight radio station.

Ben has just released ‘ten years of bar rumba: a compilation’ on BBE, is currently mixing a compilation for Laws of Motion and compiling a ‘That’s How It Is’ album for release worldwide in 2004.
