VII Tauron Nowa Muzyka Festival 2012
Thanks to the hard work and determination towards what they do, the organizers of the VII Tauron Nowa Muzyka Festival will once again transform the city of Katowice (in souther Poland) into the music capitol of the entire country as well as a vast part of Central Europe area. The “Best Small European Festival” - as named in 2010 (for the V edition of TNM) in it’s seventh year running is definite to showcase some of the most interesting newcomers as well true and still active legends of modern electronic music scene.
The entire TNM festival kicks of on Thursday night with the Opening Night Concert and a very special and entirely dedicated to the venue performance from the Canadian composer, pianist and...raper, Chilly Gonzales. Nowadays operating from Berlin, Chilly is definately one of the most influential names in the world of modern pop, jazz and twisted hip-hop. During his performance in Katowice Chilly Gonzales will be accompanied by the AUKSO Chamber Orchestra from Tychy, Poland conducted by their director Marek Moś.
The following day (Friday) will become the first proper festival day, located at Dolina Trzech Stawów in Katowice. Friday and Saturday will see many live performances spread across four stages, among which it is essential to point out the one’s coming from true masters of guitar psychodelia from The States - Gang Gang Dance, the living legends of neo-rock and indie pop - duo Beach House - also from America, and the one and only Hot Chip, innovators and stars of modern dance music as well as Mouse on Mars - from Germany.
TNM 2012 will become a melting pot for many various musical genders, from so popular nowadays dubstep and drum n’ bass - brought to you by the likes of Scuba and Morphosis, all the way to the more experimental sounds performed by Chris Clark - showcasing his latest LP released recently and so difficult to put one gender label on, and the German based group Brandt Brauer Frick Ensemble, who during their live performances play what they call “acoustic techno” with the use of live string instruments.
The organizers have not forgotten about rap and hip-hop enthusiasts and have invited Speech Debelle (with her latest album form Ninja Tune), ESKMO who plays instrumental hip-hop and comes from California same as the probably biggest name in instrumental hip-hop i the world - Madlib who will perform with a special featuring from Freddie Gibbs, and upcoming star of US ghetto rap.
But, without a shadow of a doubt, one of the most awaited and anticipated performance during this years’ Tauron Nowa Muzyka Festival comes from two of the great legends of electronic music of different kinds, now teamed up together as Caribou & Four Tet Back2Back DJ Set. If legends are being mentioned let’s just say that The Black Dog are playing as well, with The Field dropping his latest LP live during the last weekend of August in Katowice, Poland.
TNM 2012 is also about newcomers and the hottest names of the minute in the world of electronic music. These year the organizers have selected Saschienne, XXYYXX, Nguzunguzu, Young Montana?, Lapalux, Full Crate & Mar, 120 Days and many more with most of them coming over to Poland for the first time ever.
Last but definately not least, comes Sunday Closing Down Concert in an Evangelical Church in Katowice which has last year been used for the same purpose and housed Jamie Woon with his intimate and very emotional live performance. This year it’s also about young and intriguing vocalist from the UK - King Krule. With just 18 years of age and his debut LP still to be released you could not get any closer to New Music (as Nowa Muzyka stands for) than this. This young musician has already been compared to legends such as Leonard Cohen and Morrissey.
What’s most important is that all of the artists mentioned in this short summary come together to about 1/3 of the complete lineup of this years’ Tauron Nowa Muzyka Festival and more musical but not only, attractions and announcements are still to come.
