Orkidea - Radio Unity 012 (Special old school prog classics mix)

By orkidea

Special old school progressive mix for warming up before my 01.01.10 23 hour DJ session. Here with a short description of each track:

Spooky: Little Bullet (Live Version)

Sasha’s Xpander is based on this ultimate prog trance classic from 1993. Produced by Charlie May who produced Xpander and lots of other Sasha stuff later on. This version was also IMO the highlight of Sasha & Digweed’s Northern Exposure 2 CD. Only 125 BPM but filled with emotion and amazing soundscapes.

Der Dritte Raum: Hale Bopp (Original mix)

Another Sasha powerplay (also featured on his Global Underground mix) by german Der Dritte Raum. This track seems to stand the test of the times very well. Ten years old and still sounds amazing at the club. There is also more rocking and pumping Starecase vs Nick Warren remix which I’ve been mostly playing at gigs but this is more hypnotic and groovy. Music for 21st century.

Underworld: Dark & Long (Dark Train mix)

THE ultimate Underworld track. I used to play this for couple years after getting it in 1994. Made famous by Trainspotting movie and was hammered by pretty much everybody at the time. Here featured in it’s 10+ minute “Dark Train” version. Dark and hypnotic yet somehow light and positive.

Gat Decor: Passion

Track doesn’t get much more feel good than this:) Year is 1992 and progressive house has just exploded big time in UK. Trancey basslines combined with house pianos and percussion was THE sound at the time. Finnish producers Heikki L and Mr.A made super good remix/remake of this couple years ago. Find it if you like the original. One of the best remakes ever.

Saints & Sinners: Pushin Too Hard

This is almost like an old disco track but with it’s hypnotic and slowly building structure is very credible still. Yet another Sasha & Diggers classic. Was one of THE tunes of millenium NYE between ‘99 and ‘00. Futureshock remix is also very nice and more pumping.

Jerome Isma-Ae: Phantom

If someone says prog doesn’t sound as good as it used then this guy should prove them wrong Jerome Isma-ae has been put out so many bombs perfectly balancing bottom heavy basslines with great hooks and always having rock solid groove. Also balancing nicely between the underground and more accesible sound. THE breakthrough producer of last couple years. I had been playing his stuff for sometime already but this was the track that totally blew my mind. This breakdown at DTM in Helsinki in the summer of 2007 bring back so many good memories.

Tilt: Places (Luna Vocal Mix)

Paul Oakenfold’s Perfecto label’s finest moments. Back in 1996 pretty much everything they put out was pure gold or at least had one good remix on the package. Vocals delivered on this one by none other than DJ Quiver who used to be one third of Tilt together with Parks & Wilson before the Andy Moor times. This track is at the same time powerful through the rhythm section yet fragile and sensual with the melodies.

Infusion: Love & Imitation (Album mix)

Australia’s finest trio IMO. Stand out track from their 2004 album ‘Six Feet Above Yesterday’. Nicely morphing together breakz, prog house and trance for an energy filled piece of EDM. Used to play this for a long long time and I’m still not tired of it. Also check out their bootleg mix of Kate Bush ‘Running Up That Hill’ for another fine piece of hypnotic, energetic, dricing progressive house.

Atlas: Compass Error (Tarrentella vs. Redanka remix)

The original came out already in 1993 and was one of John Digweed’s Renaissance 2 mix CD’s highlights. Tarantella and Redanka updated it quite perfectly in 2002 (?). Phat bassline and filled with emotion. EPIC yet without a hint of cheese. Redanka is still doing very nice prog tracks and remixes with a definite old school vibe yet with today’s production sound and quality.

Sunscreem: Perfect Motion (Sunday Club remix)

My all time hero March Mitchell’s finest moment perhaps? Great update of 1992 Renaissance classic. First heard on Ian Ossia’s Renaissance compilation and since played at countless parties especially at Unity events in Helsinki. This was the closing track of Unity’s fifth anniversary in Gloria in 2001. Everything felt… “perfect” that moment.
