Ceres is the largest asteroid in the Solar System, orbiting at an average distance of 413 million km from the Sun.
Because Ceres has not been visited by spacecraft, size estimates depend upon telescopic observations. There has been a lot of variability in published reports as different observers have used different techniques and different instruments to make their estimates.
The Dawn space mission is scheduled to visit Ceres in 2015.
