May we introduce to you Matt Welch and Terry Ryan a.k.a. Atomic Hooligan. The standard setting and boundary pushing DJ and producer duo have long hit the Music world firmly between the eyes with quality 12 after 12 and of course their debut album YOU ARE HERE in March of 2005 (Listed as no.7 in the DJ Mag top 10 albums of the year).
This album, exemplifies everything that is fresh about the Hooligans themselves and the figurative musical high rise block that they inhabit. Their music is always informed by the ever more popular breaks movement, but never pinned down by it. Proof of this can be found on YOU ARE HERE, and in their 9 piece live band show that has already rocked FABRIC LIVE, CARGO and Festivals including GLASTONBURY and The GLADE.
But its not just their album that is shooting the Hooligan lads stratospheric this year! Fast gaining the reputation of remix Royalty, and following on from the huge success of their remixs of Cowgirl and Born Slippy for Underworld, their rework of Lee Coombs & Andy(Plump djs's) Gardener - Obsessional Rhythm on Finger Lickin sent the Hooligans straight in at number 1 in the Breaks and Beats chart. As well as this, they joined that very elite club by appearing on the front Cover of DJ Mag. Atomic Hooligan support is strong on the airwaves, with Eddy Temple Morris saying that the hooligan album launch in April was his session of the year on the XFM website, and calling YOU ARE HERE a Contender for album of the year.
DJ wise, the Hooligans just go from strength to strength. Starting 2005 by playing the FUZZY SUMMER BREAK festival in Sydney, Australia and ending it at the world famous super club FABRIC. Theres no wonder they are voted in the top 3 breaks DJs in the world. Mid way through the year Japan was the spot to rock for the Hooligan live band. After entering the national albums charts at no.11 the 6 piece band whirl winded a 3 city tour to a raptures reception, and sold a sh*t load more cds. Between the busy live show schedules, they are managing to fit in DJ dates early in the year in Canada, along with return trip to Japan and a China tour in late Winter.
A DJ for the people, always aiming to please the crowd through an energetic and eclectic mix of no-nonsense music"
Jay Cunning's been in the mix since day one with various styles of 'Hardcore', 'House' + 'D'n'B'. He started to consolidate this jockey sluttage in 1996 when opted for a bit of monogamy and settled down with 'Breakbeat'.
From his original residency on Breaks FM back in 99 to his weekly residency on Kiss100, mixed that up with an exclusive residency @ Andy C's Ram nite at 'The End' it's fair to say this guy is one of the hardest work on the scene.
As word's spread of Jay's 3 deck versatility he's been able to put it about across the world from Russia to Romania, Spain to Canada and has acclaimed production collaborations with some of these scenes finest.
2004 started off full steam ahead with Jay joining forces with Atomic Hooligan to form 'Menu Music', a concept that focus's on throwing up big parties with big party tunes. The showpiece of 'Menu' is a '7 Decks and FX' show with live beatbox MC's Xander which see's them regularly at St Petersburg's Tunnel Club, the annual TM Base festival in Romania and festivals and clubs all over the World.
Infekto (Riku Pentti) has been the broken beats pioneer in Finland since 1994. Co-founder of the first Finnish breakbeat label Pyssy and half of the chart topping hip hop/beats producer duo Skillsters. Skillsters is responsible for producing the first ever finnish hip hop album (2000) and was also hired to produce and be a part of the live act of Finlands biggest dance music export Bomfunk Mc's on their 3rd album. Many Finnish hip hop acts have also hired Infekto's avantgarde scratching skills and his fierce breaks and drum&bass dj sets have been heard from Tampere (Where his eclectic breakbeat club "beatformers" is running 7th year!) to New Delhi. Infekto's tunes combine the whole spectrum of broken beats from funk to hip hop to nu-breaks to drum& bass not forgetting the raw ol' skool hardcore sound of 92' and a touch of jazz. His first release on nine2five "Left hand Jazz" got rave reviews from some of the biggest names in the business: appeared on a Gilles Peterson comp on the cover of MUZIK magazine etc. That opened the flood gates. What followed was wide variety of breakbeat mayhem and critical acclaim on such UK labels as Passenger, Hospital, Menu Music and Heavy Disco. Infekto's dare we say it, 'infectious', breakbeat bootlegs on the unofficial "medcab" label ("Me Myself and I" with Will Power &"Infekto's Message") have been among the most creative and enjoyable unofficial breaks mixes of the past years. His freshly released debut album "Occam's Razor" pulls together all the biggest 12" hits and sprinkles some real goodies on top. Brand new tracks including Flash Lighter("One of the biggest tunes this summer"-IDJ/"Single of the month" - TTR) and Sexy dancer have been gaining support from all the A league breaks DJs. Occam's Razor made it to the top 15 on breakspoll albums 2006 as well. Infekto was also voted for the best electronic music dj in Finland @ bassogaala 2006.
