S. Thompson (Access, Scotland)

Dj Snowy Thompson first experienced electronic music in 1991 at a party in Germany on school exchange at the age of 15. He went home with a desire to relive this different sound, as a change to the previous musical diet of metal, such as Iron Maiden and Metallica. In his small home town in northern Scotland, at the time, electronic music was only available either on mix tapes from illegal parties, circulating among small groups at school, or the toy town techno played on the UK charts. Being scorned by the “normal” kids for being part of the small group of ravers dancing to these mix tapes only fuelled his hunger for this music. The move to University in Edinburgh opened up awe-inspiring opportunities to experience new types of music. After the initial introduction to legendary Edinburgh techno and house clubs Pure, Tribal Function and Sativa, where he experienced DJs like Dave Clarke, Farley "Jackmaster" Flash, Neil Landstrumm, Dave Tarrida and Twitch to name but a few, he shifted toward hip hop scene, which at the time went hand in hand with the local skateboard scene. From hip hop his tastes developed towards jungle and drum&bass with the introduction of the club Manga in Edinburgh in 1995.

This didn’t seem to give the same feelings on the dancefloor as the earlier experiences, thus his search continued. After a brief flirtation with the city’s heavy acid techno clubs, the launch of the club Camel Beats in 1998 rekindled the flame held for Detroit and German influenced techno. Thus both Camel Beats and Pure became his home on Friday nights for the following few years. He decided to start DJing around about the same time, as his friends were getting fed up of him always changing CDs or tapes after just one track.

In 2001 Snowy and a few of his friends formed the DJ collective called the Dropout DJs and began playing at various bars and outdoor parties in and around Edinburgh. Soon after they secured a weekly Tuesday club night called Split showcasing local resident DJs, as well as new upcoming talent, and a monthly Friday night named Access. At Access the Dropout DJs entertained several guest DJs and live acts – such as Kevin Saunderson, the Hacker, Kiko, Agoria, Richard Bartz, Creme de Menthe, Daviv Carretta, Oxia, Ivan Smagghe, The Psychonauts and Luke Vibert – whilst still also bringing in local legends, from Robbie Dylan (Camel Beats) to Neil Templar (Dogma) and the Avionix Records live show.

Snowy’s current musical interests range from hip hop, through the likes of the Red Hot Chilli Peppers and Jack Johnson, to techno. When playing out, he has recently been mixing electropop, Gigolo sound and EBM, among others.
