Dixon is a DJ. A discjockey in the truest sense of the word, and a man on a mission.
Born in Berlin 28 years ago, Steffen "Dixon" Berkhahn is first and foremost a House DJ. He was a weekly resident at the some of the most important nightclubs in Berlin since the mid Nineties such as the legendary E-Werk,or the the Tresor club. But it soon became obvious that his definition of House was much deeper than the House music which was played in Berlin at that time.
From 1996 on he ran Audio Video Disco one of Germanys most influencial House night at the WMF club in Berlin together with his partner Mitja Prinz. There is no way of avoiding Dixon if you are speaking about contemporary House music in Germany today.
In 1998 he hooked up with the Jazzanova boys and his first release for their Sonar Kollektiv label was his remix for the Jazzanova side-project Extended Spirit. Since then he has remixed tons of artists such as Femi Kuti, Atjazz, Jazzanova, Attica Blues, Brooks, I-Cube, Georg Levin, Taxi, Kemetic Just, Beanfield, Clara Hill, Fauna Flash, Meitz and not so many others. In 2002 Dixon he started a production collaboration with Recreation-artist Georg Levin called Wahoo. Watch them come.
Off Limits, his Mix-CD series on his own Sonar Kollektiv sublabel Recreation Recordings shows his definition of a typical deep fullspectrum House night once a year - nothing more and nothing less
Over the last 5 years, the success of his remixes and his Off Limits Mix CD brought him to nearly all good House-clubs worldwide He was so busy travelling and producing that he stopped his weekly residency in Berlin for the last year. Since there are just a few good House clubs left in germany he just decided to relaunch his club-night again this summer - support your local House-community!
Where do connections to Detroit, Chicago, New York, Berlin and Paris all emerge? No, it is not the Frankfurt airport because this city is even another part of it. Geographically it might not make any sense but music-wise we are definitely talking about Karlsruhe here. In the little town in very western Germany all these cities influences join forces in the studio of Frank Wiedemann and Kristian Beyer, together forming the duo Âme (speak: Ahm, = French for soul). Their soulful mission to explore far beyond the borders of house music already captured the attention all major peeps involved in present club music. Delivering constant quality with 12"s that are rocking house, techno and broken beat floors alike it seems like a logical move to proceed to the next step of releasing a collection of their winners.
Âme's sound is easily accessible without ever loosing deepness, complexity and a distinct twist. Their inspirations, how diverse they might be, are clevery quoted but never copied. What started of with a B-Side on a Sampler for Soulbrother Dixon's "Off Limits" Series has since then shot off to become a coherent success story. First remix requests from the Trüby Trio, Simone Serritella, Jazzanova, Nigel Hayes and Random Factor enabled the duo to show their various disguises under the rooftop of Deep House. As we speak the story of Âme continues with pushing the boundaries of new sounds, patterns and arrangements.
