David West - Biography
With the benefit of an early musical education, it comes as no surprise that David West was to later emerge as one the most significant players within the realms of contemporary electronic dance music. Having become acquainted with the delights of the piano at the age of just two, his discovery of the synthesiser (that most symbolic instrument for electronic dance music producers) five years later was to ultimately guide him towards the infinite possibilities that only electronic music can offer.
Wests emergence as a serious producer began in 1994; allying with Robin Söderman to form Antiloop (also operating irregularly under the Face and The Buckwheat Rebels aliases), West honed his talents and tightened his skills through a regular stream of productions and remixes. Out of Antiloop emerged an artist and producer with an abundance of creative ability and a healthy appreciation of the complex and intricate relationships existing between the diverse genres of electronic music. Ever since, the name David West has been synonymous with highly sophisticated and faultlessly constructed productions, musical works of art that have served to reshape and redefine the progressive scene.
In 2005, West joined forces with long time partner-in-crime Andreas Hermansson to create Larry Mountains 54 which became the debut release for Anjunadeep, the fledgling sister label of Anjunabeats dedicated to showcasing productions with a markedly different sound. Effortlessly reconciling and synthesising elements of progressive, house and trance this production, atmospheric, deep, funky and brimming with delicious melodies was a stunning statement of intent for the label, setting incredibly high standards for subsequent releases to adhere to. Previously, under their Synergy guise, West and Hermansson had already started to force back the boundaries of progressive electronic music with Hello Strings. Contrasting uplifting strings with a corrosive, distorted bassline and enriching the sound with glistening synths and soaring vocals, the listener could only marvel at the effortless fusion of genres and the complex web of sound on display. During a prolific period with regards to musical output, West had also collaborated with Özgür Can and under the Audioholics name the duo sculpted the masterful External Key. Built on top of a deep rhythm section and exhibiting a much more melancholic aura than his previous collaborative productions, West had demonstrated his enthusiasm for progression through experimentation, reiterating this philosophy through his remixes for artists as diverse as Dominic Plaza (Sounds Rushing), Carrie Skipper (Time Goes By) and Tilt (New Day).
2006 saw West deliver a number of impressive individual productions; indeed, by taking the melancholic sounds of External Key to another level, the magnificent Suffering Island was born, perhaps the definitive example of the David West sound. Built from the bottom up on top of an immensely powerful groove, Suffering Island transports you through a dream generously filled with gliding atmospheres, stuttering vocals and insistent melodies. Subsequent production Make U Mine has seen West branching out once more, applying his talents to create a much more orthodox trance sound than that which we have become accustomed to.
Now, through the acquisition of a considerable amount of experience as a producer and remixer, together with an educated ear for high-quality music, West Recordings has been born. And it will come as no surprise to many that future releases on this fledgling label will share the same qualities that characterise the music of the man at the helm.
