bpm magazine review:

Nick Warren
Paris, GU30
Global Underground

Whereas most dance music mix CD's start off with a bang and just keep
going, Nick Warren's Global Underground Paris mix embraces the
minimalist approach, and with utter success. Tracks chosen here
emphasize the rich subtleties of texture and rhythm, far more than the
thud of dance floor, and because both CD's are so different from one
another, this is almost like getting two separate mood albums, packaged
together.

Think of CD1 as the pre-party, or the 6am after-party, and
CD2 as the tonified rager. Common elements amongst the two are minimal
tribalism, deep funk, dub, and an atmospheric soundscape that defies
convention. Intelligently bred, with gradual, subtle shifts, CD1 emotes
a perpetual state of longing and admiration. Stellar tracks include
Joey Fehrenbach's absolutely gorgeous "Being Around You," and "Behold,"
and the sweetly confident, and yet utterly alluring sound of
Audioglider's "Whiskers." The overall effect of this first CD is enough
to get you high, drunk, and stoned on the sheer power of the music
itself. Far more than uniquely beautiful, it is incredibly Warren, and
utterly fresh in its ethereal, tribal-sexiness.

On the flip-side, is the dance party - CD2. Although the majority of tracks aren't as sweetly
gorgeous as in the first CD, they fit the mood of a tres-chic party--
superbly mixed and rolling with attitude. Absolute standouts are Pole
Folder's "B Side," and Habersham & Kazell's "Paradise Rockers." Of
these two, it is the super-funky, acid-drenched, dub-heavy rolling
basslines of Paradise Rockers that forever morphs the genres of dance,
dub, and funk - so well produced, so deeply drenched in pulsations of
rhythm, this is a track that quite simply, you won't be able to resist.
As a whole, this GU mix is far more unique than any other in its depth
and breadth of sound. Abstract and sweet, flirty, sexy, and downright
dirty, this is highly recommended for the clubber and the lover, alike.
Aria Mayland. 10/10
