A New Sound for East Coast Music : new electronica label launches in Halifax

When one thinks of music from Canada’s east coast, some of us tend to think of fiddles and bagpipes; others might think of the modern rock sound that embodied the music press naming Halifax as “the new Seattle” a few years back. A new group of Atlantic Canadians is out to change both of those notions in a big way. The people behind Atlantic Standard Recordings want to make you think of electronic dance music when you hear Halifax and the Maritime provinces mentioned in music circles. The new Halifax-based recording label is set to launch its website and announce its existence to the world with a show featuring its roster of talent at Reflections Cabaret on Sackville Street in Halifax’s downtown on December 16th, 2005.

“I am very excited to be working on this project” says Dmitry “Deemah” Mescheryakov one of Atlantic Standard’s partners and one of its principal recording artists, “I like how working and performing with DJs gives an extra something special to the music I create in the studio. It adds a dimension that is hard to create alone.” Having immigrated from Russia 5 years ago, he met Halifax DJs Chris “Mathematix” Matheson and Nick “Nonsense” Oliver after the two got exposed to some of his music on a compilation called “Dig Your Roots”, released by the national body that represents campus and community radio stations in Canada, the NCRA. “We knew right away, before even meeting him, that this artist had a genuine flavour and a unique, well-defined sound, two of the things you need most to succeed in the dance music business” says Matheson. “Now, we just needed to take the business element to the next level, and organize ourselves professionally to take on the world.” Along with the launch of the label’s website and imminent release of music in the form of both digital download and 12” vinyl samplers (still the favoured format by DJs the world over), Atlantic Standard Recordings will be representing Canada’s east coast at the Winter Music Conference in Miami, dance music’s annual industry convention and the biggest of its kind in North America.

Chris Matheson

A stylish beat crafter and polished mixologist, Chris Matheson has been bringing his fusion of funky west coast bliss and chunky east coast flavour to the ears and dancefloors of Atlantic Canada for over 10 years. With over 20 residencies held in a variety of Halifax clubs over the years, finding him behind the decks in clubs and dance parties guarantees a love of the groove spilling onto the floor from the speakers. Beyond Halifax, his work as a performer has taken him all over, playing events from Montreal to Athens. Feeling he had so much more to bring to the floor, he created a place where the beats flowed not from his dexterous manipulation but from his own mind’s ear into the sampler, with a generous helping of heart and soul. His productions fuse all of the sounds you can hear in one of his DJ sets and they are as eclectic as they are friendly.

Turning things up a notch in 2005, this seasoned professional DJ means business in more ways than one. His exemplary turntable and selection skills dovetailed with a background in business have naturally brought him to the next level, where Atlantic Standard Recordings was born. This year will see the launch of his vision, one he shares with fellow DJs and producers in the Atlantic Standard stable.
